These New Puritans - “Hidden” - now if I was going to say “points for ambition” it would be for something like this. Purcell, martial drumming, lazer noises, bass, paranoid muttering… some tracks are pretty woeful but the bits where the balance of drum and horn are right are kind of Carmodically amazing, as in I honestly didn’t think it was still possible for a band to come up with music that was this English, this modern, and this challenging (though it by no means hits all its targets).
Partly it’s the time of year, too - catches the feeling you get as Autumn slips into Winter of an island sliding into darkness and the sea, trapped under history.
Will definitely place in my year-end list, “We Want War” should do well as a track too.
