When I go back and read comics from my childhood, which predate the anti-thought-bubble revolution that apparently occurred sometime in the 90s when my attention was elsewhere, the constant expository thought bubbles frequently make the experience painful. Alan Moore and Frank Miller comics from those days are the only ones that really hold up for me now (though I bought a shitload of 80s-era Marvel books, most not by Frank Miller or Alan Moore, while overcome with nostalgia at a 50 cent sale recently, so I sure hope I won’t end up hating all of those). A lot of the time all those dudes did was just move the thought bubbles into narrative captions though, surely? View high resolution
